Mongolia, world’s least populous country
Located in the heart of Asia, Mongolia borders Russian Federation to the north and China to the south. Mongolia shares 4,630 kilometres of its border with China and 3,452 kilometres with Russia. The country has a geographical area of 1,564,116 square kilometres. This makes Mongolia the 19th largest country in the world, after Libya and Iran. The Netherlands matches Mongolia 38 times and Belgium 51 times. Mongolia has about 3.3 million inhabitants and has a fairly young population, with almost half being under 21. This is due to government policies. Women are rewarded if they bear many children. The population density is the lowest in the world at about 2.1 inhabitants per square kilometer making Mongolia, the world’s least populous country.
Unlike the Netherlands, one of the most densely populated country in the European Union, with 507 people per square kilometer. Few Dutch people realise that the Netherlands is already as full as India, three times as full as China and Indonesia, four times as full as the average EU and as much as 12 times as full as the US. You cannot go for a walk in the Netherlands without encountering someone or something from the inhabited world.
Mongolia is the world’s least populated country; its sheer emptiness is downright impressive. You can drive around for hours without meeting anyone. Nature in Mongolia is impressive to say the least. The immense plains and vast deserts and steppes give an unmistakable sense of tranquillity. The coniferous forests in the north, the lakes and the mighty mountains are the habitat of numerous special animals and birds. For birdwatchers, Mongolia is a paradise: there are a huge number of unusual birds such as the very special Henderson’s ground jay.
